What the Junk Mail Filter Does for You

The Junk Mail filter is a system-created filter that acts as you specify on incoming messages that the system's anti-spam scanner categorizes as junkmail (spam); the default action is Move to the Junk Mail folder. This filter displays in your filter list on the Options > Message Filters page.

One of two mutually exclusive anti-spam scanners could be used. Each anti-spam scanner uses different methods to assign each message a UCE Score; the higher the score the more likely the message is spam. If the total score after anti-spam scanning is over 50, the message is deemed junkmail and is delivered to your Junk Mail folder instead of your Inbox.

Questions

Using the Junk Mail filter

Use the Options > Message Filters page and select the Junk Mail Filter Edit icon to customize the system Junk Mail filter. The Junk Mail filter may be Off by default. On this page, you can turn the filter On and direct it to act on junkmail only or all mail. In either case, mail from senders on your White List is exempt; the Junk Mail filter never acts on mail from senders on your White List.

  1. From the Options > Message Filters page, click the Edit icon for the Junk Mail filter.
Result: The Edit Junk Mail Filter page displays.
  2. In the Select a Filter Condition area, select one of the following:
    • Off (no mail gets this filter action): None of your incoming mail is filtered for junkmail.
    • Normal (only junkmail gets this filter action): Only system-identified junkmail is subject to your specified filter action.
    • Exclusive (all mail not from White List senders gets this filter action): All mail incoming to you from senders not on your White List is subject to your specified filter action
Result: The filter is directed to act as specified on only junkmail or on all your mail.
  3. In the Select a Filter Action area, select either of the following:
    • Move to the Junk Mail folder (default): Matching messages are moved to your junk mail folder. Note: You can change the name of your junk mail folder on the Options > Mail Settings page; for details see Settings (Mail and Composition Defaults).
    • Discard (message is irrevocably lost): Matching messages are deleted.
Once you have created your filter, click OK.
Result: The system accepts the settings for the Junk Mail filter. Incoming messages are filtered and acted upon as directed.

Will the Junk Mail filter interfere with my custom message filters?

On the Options > Message Filters page, you can change the order in which your message filters are processed. If you have any doubts about the Junk Mail filter redirecting messages that another filter would act on, set the other filter to be active before your Junk Mail filter. For details on reordering message filters, see Reordering Message Filters.
